The Door
//
I woke up in the middle of the night. I was sweating profusely. I wiped the sweat off from my face and took a deep breath. I slid out from the blanket as my t-shirt was also soaked in sweat and I was feeling drained. I was about to get up when I heard the sound of the bathroom door closing loudly. I got up, muttering in anger.
"I've told her a thousand times."
But Jaanvi won't ever understand it as usual. Just, when I was about to get out from the bed to scold her, I saw the ceiling fan and the lights swinging. Maybe I was still dizzy by sleep, but I didn't have time for that. I had to teach my wife a lesson for a billionth time, to close the bathroom door gently.
I went to the bathroom, but couldn't find her there. I turned towards the bed and found her tucking in the blanket.
"What's wrong?" She asked in a groggy tone.
"You've got to close that door a little lightly, I've already told you so many times."
"Mmm.. Sorry Vishal, It won't happen again" she said rubbing her eyes.
"You do that one more time and a ghost will tap on your shoulder to make you choke on your words" I said devilishly.
"Yeah sure" She giggled and closed her eyes.
I smiled and walked towards the study where my phone was ringing. I managed to pick up on the last ring.
It was Jaanvi's voice. It says:
"Hey Vish. Sorry for not waking you up. You were snoring in deep sleep so I didn't disturb you. My colleague met with an accident and is in the ICU. So it might take a while for me to come back from the hospital. I'll be there before breakfast."
I could hear my own heartbeats, my breath got stuck. I was about to utter something when a cold hand tapped on my shoulder, I choked on my words.
"Shouldn't you be asleep??" asks Jaanvi, no not Jaanvi...
I was about to scream hard but I woke up with a shrug. This time for real. I was sweating hard. I heard the bathroom door close with a loud thud !!
Just when I was about to accept all that as a figment of my imagination, I saw the ceiling fan and lights swinging again.
